A study published in the Journal of Hypertension found that chiropractic adjustments to the upper neck (atlas/C1 vertebra) lowered blood pressure on an average of 17/10 mmHg. Thats a 17 point drop in systolic pressure and a 10 point reduction in the diastolic pressure. The authors concluded that this reduction in blood pressure was equivalent to taking 2 blood pressure medications. Participants of the study showed decreased blood pressure that continued through the 8 weeks of the study.
Chiropractic adjustments work by rebalancing the nervous system, brain and arteries. Misalignment of the upper neck can place stress on the nervous system causing a sympathetic and mechanical constriction of blood vessels. Realigning the neck balances the nervous system, bringing blood blood pressure down.
High blood pressure is just one of the many health issues that can result from an unbalance nervous system. Chiropractic has been shown to not only support healthy blood pressure but also increase immune function, decrease pain, increase the release of happy and healing hormones while lowering stress hormones, increase energy, stimulate healthy digestion, increase reproductive health and so much more.
